Ethereum Gas Fees: Understanding Gwei and Priority Fees
If you've ever tried to swap a token on Uniswap or mint an NFT on Ethereum, you’ve encountered "Gas." It’s the most frustrating part of the Ethereum experience, but once you understand the Math of Gwei, you can save significant money on every transaction.
What is Gas? (The Fuel of the World Computer)
Gas refers to the unit that measures the amount of computational effort required to execute a specific operation on the Ethereum network.
- Gwei: The "Price" of one unit of gas. 1 Gwei = 0.000000001 ETH.
- Gas Limit: The "Amount" of gas your transaction is allowed to use.
The Formula:
$$Total Fee = Gas Limit \times (Base Fee + Priority Fee)$$
Decoding the Fee Components (EIP-1559)
1. The Base Fee
The minimum amount of Gwei required for a transaction to be included in a block. This fee is Burned (removed from supply). Check our Burn Rate Guide for more info.
2. The Priority Fee (The Tip)
An extra amount you pay to "skip the line." During "Hot Mints" or market crashes, you must pay a higher tip to ensure your transaction is processed quickly.
Three Ways to Save on Gas Fees
1. Time the Market
Gas prices reach their peak when the US and European markets are both awake. The cheapest times are usually weekends and between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM UTC.
2. Use Layer 2s (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base)
Layer 2s "batch" thousands of transactions together before sending them to Ethereum. This allows you to pay as little as $0.01 per transaction while still using the security of the Ethereum network.
3. Set a Lower Priority
If your transaction isn't urgent (e.g., sending ETH to a friend), manually set a lower Gwei limit. It might take 10 minutes instead of 10 seconds, but you'll save on the tip.
Pro Tip: Account for Slippage
During high gas periods, transactions can fail. If your transaction fails, you still pay the gas fee! Always check your Slippage Tolerance before submitting an expensive on-chain swap.
